RiesenslalomCourseHakubaHappo-one’srenownedRiesenslalom(GiantSlalom)courseboastsover70yearsofhistoryandisthesiteforthearea’spopularskiingcompetitionknownbythesamename.ThedevelopmentoftheRiesenslalomcoursedatesbacktotheyear1945.ThefounderFukuokaTakayuki(1913–1981),askiingenthusiastandaformerprofessorofGermanandthetheoryofphysicaleducationatHoseiUniversity,followedhisvisionofestablishingaJapaneselongdownhillandslalomskirun,similartotheonesinAustria.Fukuokawasasuccessfulmemberofhisschool’strackandfieldclub,andbeganpracticingskiingandmountainclimbingasaformofathleticstraining.Thecoldweatherwonoverhisheartthough,andhesoonturnedhisfullattentiontowintersports.Fukuokastudieddifferentskiingtechniquesandmethods,andeventuallypublishedhisownbookbasedonhisexperiences.AfterresettlingtoHosono(modern-dayHakubaHappo-one)shortlybeforeWorldWarII(1939–1945),hefoundanappropriateplacetodeveloparunfordownhillandslalomskiing.Afterconvincingthelocalgovernmenttodeveloptherunbyemphasizingthepotentialofskiingtodrawtouriststothearea,theconstructionworkfortheRiesenslalomwascompletedin1946,andthefirstHappo-oneRiesenslalomCompetitionwasheldin1947.Withnoski-liftsorropeways,earlyskiersoftheRiesenslalomcoursehadtodemonstrateexcellentmountainclimbingskillstoreachthetopofthe4,500m–longrun,withanelevationdifferenceof1,030m,beforeenjoyingtherun.ThisdemonstrateshowdeeplyconnectedskiingandmountainclimbingwereduringtheearlydaysofskiinginJapan.Ittookanothersevenyearsuntilthefirstlift—theNakiyamalift—wasreadyforoperation,connectingthefootofthemountainwiththeRiesenslalomCourse.SincethefirstHappo-oneRiesenslalomCompetitionin1947,amateurparticipantswhoreachthelinewithinafewsecondsdifferencefromthetopskiersarerewardedwithanoval-shapedbadge,whichisblack,blue,orreddependingonhowclosetheygottotheleaders.Theyear2019marksthe73rdanniversaryofthecompetition,whichcontinuestobeoneofthearea’smost-lovedannualeventsandattendedbybothlocalsandinternationalskiers.UrakuroIntheUrakuroonthenorthernslopeoftheKurobishi3liftintheHappoOneskiarea,youcanslidewiththesuperbpowdersnowagainstthedynamicmountainsoftheNorthAlps.OmusubiNewforthe2018-2019seasonisthe“Omusubi”powderarea.ItislocatedfromtheSkylineCoursetothePanoramaCourseonthemid-hillside.Thisareawaspreviouslyoff-limitsbuthasbeenopenedasanon-pressuresnowareaforveryadvancedskiersthroughprioreffortsbypatrolstocontrolavalanches.Ski&SnowboardSchoolHappoOneSkiSchoolhasexcellentinstructorskiingandsnowboardinglessonsboastingmorethan80yearshistoryandhascreatedtopskiers.Snowshoes,crosscountryskiing,telemarkskiing,etc.Majornatureandenjoyinglessonsandtoursarealsoheld.32
