MINUTEREPEATERRESONANCEINSPIREDBYTHEZYTGLOGGE*Forthe10thanniversaryofourfullyintegratedmanufacturewewantedtodevelopaworld-firstmasterpiecefullyhighlightingthebrand’ssavoir-faire.Astheindustryleadersinresonance,includingthemanufacture’slaboratory-certifiedresonancetechnologywasaneasychoice.ButourtwofoundersSergeMichelandClaudeGreislerwantedsomethingmore:agrandcomplicationandthefirstchimingwristwatchproducedinthecantonofBern.Inspirationforaminuterepeatercamefromanunusualsource:asixteenth-centurytowerclock.WearebasedinBienneinSwitzerland’scantonofBern,andtheywantedtopayhomagetotheregion.WhiletheFrench-speakingregionofSwitzerlandisknownforamultitudeoffamoushistoricaltimepieces,Bernhasfarfewer.Butitdoeshaveonelandmarkclockthateveryoneintheregionknows:thethirteenth-centuryZytglogge.Theclockinthistowerhasnotonlyservedasthecity’smainclockformorethan500years,thetoweralsoservedasthereferencepointfortraveltimesindicatedonstonemarkersalongthemaincantonalroads.ThisclocktowersupposedlyhelpedAlbertEinsteinhonehisspecialtheoryofrelativitywhileworkingasapatentclerkinBern.Theimpressivetowerclockisanimatedwithautomatons:fourminutesbeforethechangeofthehour,acockcrows,abear(thesymbolofBern)makeshisrounds,andajestertakesthelibertyofannouncingthehourinadvance.Andatthetopofthehour(andonthequarters),theclockchimesthetimeforalltohear.DevelopmentAsmastersofresonancemovementswewantedtoworkinpartnershipwithmastersofchimingwatches,andourco-FounderClaudeGreislerknewtheperfectpersonandteam:hisoldfriendAlainSchiesser,founderofCercledesHorlogers,withwhomhehadworkedwithinthepastatChristopheClaret.Workingbehindthescenes,LeCercledesHorlogershasdevelopedaroundhalfoftheminuterepeaterslaunchedbyprestigiousSwissbrandsoverthelastfewyears.Originallytheminuterepeatermechanismhadbeenenvisagedtobeinthetraditionalpositionatthebackofwatch,buttheteamdecidedthatitdeservedequalbillingwiththeresonantregulatorsdialsidewhereitcouldbeappreciatedbyall.Thisbroughtmanytechnicalchallengesofitsown.Wedidnotonlywantedtheresonantregulatorsandminuterepeaterhammersandgongstobefullyvisibleontopofthemovementdialside;Greislerand*Don'tbothertopronounceittherightway13

MINUTEREPEATERRESONANCEhisteamdidnotwantappreciationoftheanimatedmechanismstobepotentiallydilutedbytheassociatedgearingnecessarytodrivetherepeaterandgoingtrainforthetimedisplay.Sothemovementsareinvertedwiththepinionsdrivingtherepeaterhammersandhourandminutestransversingthetwoverticallystackedcalibers.Theysaynecessityisthemotherofinventionandthat’scertainlythecasehere.Spaceconstraintsmeantthattherewasinsufficientroomforseparatelargemainspringbarrelsforeachofthetwomovements,soourR&Dteamdevelopedaninnovativesinglebarrelwithtwoindependentmainspringsinside,eachdrivingitsownmovement.Thehighvisibilityofthecomplicationsdialsidealsodictatesthatthewatchmakershavetopayveryspecialattentionwhenassemblingandregulatingthewatchastheslightestscratchormarkonthebeautifullyhand-finishedsurfaceswouldbevisibletoall.Skeletonizedbridgesandplatesallowvisualaccessthroughthesapphirecrystaldialdeepintothemovement.dingmultiplethermictreatments.Whiletheexactprocessisacloselyguardedsecret,itissaidtobeverysimilartoPatekPhilippe’sprocessformakinggongs.Allcomponentsarefinishedtotheveryhighestlevel,butofspecialnoteisthetremblagehand-engravingonthelargegoldenbalancecockssupportingthetwooscillatingbalances.Whiletitaniumistheperfectmetalforbothtransmittingtheresonatingsoundfromthegongstotheearandensuringthatthewatchisrelativelylightandcomfortabletowear,itisa‘cold’metal;thiscoolnessisbalancedbythewarmgold.ResonanceInthepursuitofhorologicalaccuracy,precision,andratestability,resonancehasusuallyinvolvedusingtwoindependentmovementsconnectedtoallowfinetuningoftheWhilethevastmajorityofthecomponentswereproducedin-houseatourmanufactureinSwitzerland,thegongsweremadebyLeCercledesHorlogersinaprocessinvolvingmorethan30differentstagesinclu-«Inventionisnottheproductoflogicalthought,eventhoughthefinalproductistiedtoalogicalstructure.»—AlbertEinstein14

DECORATIONHandengravingsSteelburinsindifferingsizesandwax-coatedholdersarethetoolsoftheengraver.Intheengraver’shands,theworkpiecebecomesauniqueworkofart.Ourengraverdrawsherownmotifdesignontheworkpiecewithaneedleaccordingtoheroriginaldrawing.Butherhand,workingunderthemicroscope,cannotguidetheburintoatenthofamillimetereverytime;onlyamachinecouldcopytheengravingexactly.Thespecialdecorationcalled“Tremblage”forexampleisvisibleonthetwobridgesofourMinuteRepeaterResonanceandiscompletelymadebyhandusingatraditionalengravingtool.Makingtheessentialexceptionalthisisourmotivation.Polishing:FilingtoperfectionEmbellishingeverypartofamovementmakeseachArminStromwatchakintoahandcraftedpieceofjewelry.Workingbarebrassorsteelbyhandistimeconsumingwork:edgesofplates,bridgesandleversareperfectlychamferedor,asthewatchmakerscallit,beveled.Everypartisthenpolished,evenwhentheembellishingwouldnotvisibleinthefinishedwatch.Bevelingandpolishingcallsforatrainedeyeandfingertipsensitivitytogetherwithplentyofpatienceandperseverance.Inacomparativelysmallpartlikeapalletsbridge,awatchmakercaneasilyspendhalfanhourormoreonthedetailedwork.Wedonotcompromisewhenitcomestothedecorationofourwatches.FinishingwiththegrindingwheelArminStromusestraditionalmachinesforgrindingpatternsontothemovement.TheclassicfinishusedinfinewatchmakingknownasGenevaStripes(CôtesdeGenève),iscreatedthankstoanabrasivediscthatisguidedovertheworkpieceinperfectlystraightlines.Circulargraining(Perlage)isadecorativemotifreminiscentofclouds,typicallyusedonmainplates.Toachievethispattern,thewatchmakerusesarotatingabrasivepencilandgentlymakescontactwiththeworkpiece,graduallyworkingacrossthewholesurface.Thiscreatesthecharacteristicoverlappingcirculargrainedmotif.Allrotatingpartsofthemovementareembellishedwithacirculargrinding.Wearepassionateaboutimprovement,developmentandinnovation.Wearedrivenbyrethinkingwatchmakingideasinordertocreatenewwaysofhowyoucandecorateatimepiece.Nowhereisthedelicacyandcomplexityofthisfinishingandembellishmentmoreinevidencethanina"Skeleton"watchwhosetransparencyrevealsthebeautyandintricatestructureofitsmovement.Thewatchmaker'sdecorativeartfindsitsfullestexpression.#ASwatchmaking«Wecultivatethecareforthedetailsandwebelieveintheevolutionofwatchmaking.»—ClaudeGreisler24
