CHRISTIAANVANDERKLAAUWASTRONOMY35notemitlightbutreflectthelightfromthesun.ThebrightestweretheMorningandEveningStar,ofwhichitwasdiscoveredonlymuchlaterthattheyareoneandthesameplanet:Venus.Theweaker‘star’MercurywasmentionedbytheBabyloniansasPeoplestartedtointerpretgroupsofstarsthatwereclosetoeachotherinthefirmament(butthatinrealityrarelyhadanythingtodowitheachother)asconstellations.Amidstthestablepictureofconstellationsthereweresomeindividualstars.Onlymuchlaterdiditbecomeevidentthatthese‘wanderingstars’aretheplanetswhich,liketheEarth,revolvearoundthesun.Planetsthemselvesdoearlyas3000BC.Mars(theredplanet),JupiterandSaturnwerealsorecognisedinAncienttimes.Alltheseplanetsarevisiblewiththenakedeye.Weakerplanetswereobservedthankstothedevelopmentofthetelescope:Uranusin1781,Neptunein1846andPlutoin1930.However,in2006Plutowasdowngradedtoadwarfplanet,ofwhichmorewerefound,evenfurtherawaythanPluto.
