IntroductionCOLLECTINGRAREPEOPLEWhatmakesabrandtick?Forgingrelationshipsandcommittingtoacourseofactionthatobservesandrespectsbothheritageandambitionisasimportanttoestablishingabrand’slegacy,evenatitsgenesis,asthewatchesthemselves.Differentiationarisesfromexactlywhere,onwhat,oronwhomabrandchoosestoshineitsspotlight.Czapek&Cie.doesnotplaceitspastbeforeitspresentandfarlessbeforeitsfuture.Thebrand’spastisasourceofinspiration,ofwonder,and,inFranciszekCzapek’scaseinparticular,considerableintrigue.Butitisnotthefocusofthecompanytoday.Today,Czapek’sfocusinonthepeoplebehindthebrand–thosemenandwomenthathelpedreviveaonce-esteemednamefromobscurity.Thebrandexistsfor,andbecauseoftherarepeoplethatbreathednewlifeintoastorysounbelievableinpartsthatitseemsmoreakintofantasythanreallife.WhenIfirsthadthechancetoworkwithXavierin2015,Istartedtosensejusthowdifferentthisteamis…Anincreasinglydiscerningclientelehashadapositiveeffectoncreativestrategieswithinourindustry.Nowadays,itismorecommontohearofbrandsreachingoutovertheonce-desperatelydefendedrampartstoconnectwiththeiraudience.In2012,however,suchanopenapproachtobranddevelopmentwasexceptional.Crucially,Czapeklistens.Ratherthandictatingtoitsfollowers,itrespondstothem.Ithasnotforgottenhowmuchofitscharacterreliesuponthecharactersbehinditssuccess.Thebrandcomprisestalentedindividualswhoshareacommongoal.Beyondthat,however,Czapekhasitsshareholders,mediaandmanufacturingpartners,friendsofthebrand,and,ultimately,itscustomerstothankforitssuccess.Inshort,Czapekismorethanabrand.Itisacommunityoflike-mindedrarepeople,propellingtheonce-forgottenmaster’smarquetowardafuturethatislookingmoreassuredandsteady-footedwitheverysubsequentstep.RobNudds,journalistandfriend3

18391811FranciszekCzapekisborninSemonice,KingdomofBohemia(nowadaystheCzechRepublic).YoungCzapeklearnswatchmaking.HisfamilyemigratestoPoland.CzapekfoundsPatek,Czapek&CieonMay1st,1839,withfellowcountrymaninexileAntoineNorbertdePatek,whomhemetin1836.ThelatterhadalsofledPolandfollowingthefailedinsurrection.ItwasFrançoisCzapekwhoinvitesAntoinePatektobecomeinvolvedinwatchmaking.1832CzapekjoinsthePolisharmytryingtoousttheRussians.HefleestoSwitzerlandafterthecollapseoftheuprising.Hesoonfoundshisfirstcompany,Czapek&Moreau,withalocalpartner,andGallicizeshisnametoFrançois.

18551850CzapekwritesoneofthefirstwatchmakingtreatiseeverwritteninPolish.Czapekrisestobecomeoneofthegreatwatchmakersofhistime.InFrance,hebecomesPurveyortotheImperialCourt,WatchmakerofHisImperialHighness,PrinceNapoleon.Atitsheight,hiscompanyhasboutiquesinGeneva,WarsawandonPlaceVendômeinParis.1845ThepartnershipbetweenFrançoisCzapekandAntoineNorbertdePateklastssixyears,duringwhichtheycreateseveralexceptionaltimepieces.Attheendoftheircontract,inApril1845,theydissolvethepartnership.Bothmencontinueproducingtimepieces.CzapekfoundsCzapek&CieonMay1st,1845,withanewpartner,JuliuszGruzewski.
