ContributionHiroshiKitagawaProfessorGraduateSchoolofScienceForabouttwentyyears,Ihavebeenworkingon“inter-elementfusion”mixingdifferentelementsattheatomicleveltocreatenewmaterials.In2020,ourresearchgroupcreatedanalloyoffiveelements(ruthenium,rhodium,palladium,iridium,andplatinum)thatarethebestfivehighlyefficientpuremetalcatalystsfortheelectrolysisofwatertoproducehydrogen̶aworldfirst.However,whentestingthis“brilliant5-elementteam”alloy,itsperformancewasonlytwicebetterthanthatofthebest-knowncatalystplatinum,whichfranklydisappointedme.Ontheotherhand,whenwecreatedtheworld’sfirsteight-elementalloybyaddinggold,silver,andosmium̶“underachieving”catalyststhatdonotgeneratehydrogen̶tothebrilliant5-elementteamalloy,thereactionefficiencyincreasedto11timesthatofplatinumand5timesthatofthefive-elementalloy.Thiswasastonishing.Thismademethinkaboutoursocietyandeducation.Perhapsitsuggeststhelimitationsofability-basedclasses,uniformcookie-cuttereducation,andconcentratingonacorecompetency.Withoutensuringdiversity,newideascannotemerge.Novel“chemical”reactionsoccurwhendifferentthoughtsandculturesintersect.Universitiesneedtosecurestudentdiversityandcreateenvironmentswhereexciting,unpredictablereactionsnaturallyarisefrominteractionsamongdiverseindividuals.Ihopetoseemorepeopleemergewiththecouragetobecome“alienelements”thatchangetheworldandthinkbeyondconventionalwisdom.Discoveriesbornfromunexpectedcombinationswillpavethewaytothefuture.4

CreatingnewsolartechnologiesAkiraYamamotoGraduateSchoolofHumanandEnvironmentalStudiesTodealwiththedepletionoffossilresources,peoplearelookingforwaystousethevastsolarenergyreachingEarth’ssurfaceeffectively.However,humanityhasyettoadequatelydoso.Whilesomepracticaltechnologieshavebeencommercializedandknowledgehasaccumulatedoveryearsofresearchanddevelopment,Ibelievethereisstilluntappedpotentialinusinglight.Iamdevelopingnewphotocatalytictechnologiestoproducefuelanddecomposeenvironmentallyharmfulcompoundsusinglightenergy.Ifvarioussolartechnologiesbecomepracticalandarenetworkedinenvironmentallyfriendlyways,weshouldbeabletousesunlightmuchmoreefficientlythannow.Aimingforsuchafuture,Iwanttocreatenewmolecularconversiontechnologiesusingsolarenergy.43

BuildingafutureresilienttoinfectiousthreatsMikiNagaoGraduateSchoolofMedicineInfectiousdiseasesarecausedbyexternalorganisms(pathogens)thatinvadethehumanbody.Theycanoccurregardlessoflivingenvironment,pre-existingconditions,age,orrace,andaslongashumanscoexistwithmicroorganisms,completeeradicationisdifficult.TheCOVID-19pandemichasshownusthatinfectiousdiseasesimpactnotonlyhealthcare,suchastestingandtreatment,butalsooursociallives.Ourlabstudiespathogensthatanyonecanbeinfectedby̶suchasdrug-resistantbacteria,influenza,andCOVID-19̶andthosethatmainlyaffectindividualswithweakenedimmunesystems.Weapproachthisresearchfromamicrobiologicalperspective,whilealsoconsideringthebroadersocialaspectsofinfectiousdiseases.Throughcollaborationacrossdiversefields,weexploreclinicalstrategiestopreventthelossoflovedonesfromtheseinfections.105

TowardclosingthegendergapincorporateJapanAsliM.ColpanGraduateSchoolofManagementWhilegenderdiversityamongcorporateexecutivesisadvancingglobally,Japanstillshowslittleprogressinappointingfemaleexecutives.Femaleexecutivescontributetomoreprosocialandcreativestrategicdecision-making,serveasrolemodelsforotherwomen,andenhancethesociallegitimacyofcompanies.However,duetogenderbiasesinsideandoutsidecompanies,theappointmentoffemaleexecutivesandtheirdecision-makingpowerareoftenhindered.Toaddressthisissue,IamresearchingwaystoincreasethepresenceofwomenintopmanagementinJapan,suchaspromotinggenderdiversitythroughthecooperationofinvestorsandotherstakeholdersandexpandinghighereducationopportunitiestobroadenthepoolofpotentialfemaleexecutives.126
