TheInternationalKarateOrganization(IKO)KYOKUSHINKAIKANwasinstituted60yearsagobyMasOyamatodirectthemultitudeofKyokushinpractitionersaroundtheglobewhofollowtheteachingsofMasOyamaandtopromotetheKyokushinWayforthebenefitofsocietyasawhole.ThefounderoftheIKOKYOKUSHINKAIKANwasSosaiMasutatsuOyama,(1923–1994).MasOyamaestablishedtheKyokushin(“UltimateTruth”)stylebasedontheKarateWayofbuildingcharacterandtrainingthemindandbodytocontributetosociety.SosaiMasOyama’sinimitableKyokushinSpirit,whichhereiteratedthroughouthislifetime,wasto“keepyourheadlow(modesty),eyeshigh(ambition),mouthsshut(serenity),andbaseyourselfonfilialpietytobenefitothers.”TheIKOKYOKUSHINKAIKANcurrentlyoperatesin120countriesacrosstheglobe,andmaintainsamembershipbaseofover12million.Theorganizationhasbeenheraldedasthelargestmartialartsorganizationintheworldunderthedirectorshipofasingleindividual.Theonce-everyfour-yearWorldOpenKarateChampionshipisthemilestoneeventfortheKYOKUSHINKAIKAN,welcomingnearly200pre-selectedandinvited‘knockdown’fighters,allchampionsintheirownregion,tocompeteinTokyofortheprestigioustitlebeforeasell-outcrowdofover25,000over3days.Themostrecnet,the13thWorldOpen,washeltonNovember17,18and19,2023TheheartofKyokushinKarateisrealexperience.Therecanbenoproofwithoutrealfighting.Withoutproofthereisnotrust.Withouttrustthereisnorespect.TheKarateWaybeginsandendswithrespect.ThisisthedefinitionofKyokushin.9

MasOyamaSOSAIFOUNDER-IKOKYOKUSHINKAIKAN1923-1994SosaiMasutatsuOyama,founderoftheInternationalKarateOrganizationKyokushinkaikan.BornJune4,1923.HelearnedmartialartsfromanearlyageandenteredtheYamanashiAviationSchoolattheageof14.Attheageof15,hebecameadiscipleofSenseiGichinFunakoshiwhointroducedkaratetoJapanforthefirsttime.Afterthat,hestudiedatTakushokuUniversityandWasedaUniversity,andaftertrainingintheMt.Minobe,inSeptember1947,hewontheAllJapanKarateChampionship,whichwasheldforthefirsttimeaftertheWW2.FromApril1948,heunderwentoneyearandeightmonthsoftraininginthemountainsatMt.Kiyosumi,andinNovember1950,whenhedescendedthemountain,hemeasuredhisabilitybyfightingagainstabullinTateyama,Chiba.In1952,hetraveledtotheUnitedStatesandgavedemonstra-tionstointroducekarate.Duringthattime,hehadaseriousmatchwithprofessionalwrestlersandwonall7fights.Afterthat,hefrequentlyvisitedvariouscountriesaroundtheworld,performingdemonstrationsandteaching,andspreadkaratetotheworld.In1964,theInternationalKarateOrganizationKyokushinkaikanwasestablished.In1969,headvocatedthe“directstrikingsystem(fullcontact)”andheldthe1stAllJapanKarateChampionship.In1975,heheldthe1stWorldOpenKarateChampionship,commonlyknownasthe“KarateOlympics,”creatingaKyokushinKarateboomallovertheworld.Havingaccrediteddojosin120countriesaroundtheworld,hedevotedhislifetoKyokushinKarateasthepresidentof12milliondisciples.OnApril26,1994,hepassedawayduetolungcancer.10

ShokeiMatsuiIKOKANCHOKYOKUSHINKAIKANPRESIDENTTheworldwideDirectorandPresidentoftheInternationalKarateOrganization(IKO)KyokushinkaikanisKanchoShokeiMatsui.KanchoMatsuiwasappointedtosucceedtheorganization’sdirectorshipbySosaiMasOyama.KanchoMatsuiwasthemostcelebratedKyokushinfighterofhistime.Born,AkiyoshiMatsui,hestartedKyokushinKarateatage13.In1976hejoinedtheKitaNagare-YamaDojoinChibaprefectureandmanagedtoachievetheShoDan(1stDegree)BlackBeltinalittleoveroneyear.In1980heplaced4thinthe12thAllJapanOpenKarateChampionships,whenhewasjust17.SoonafterhebecameChiefInstructoroftheKyokushinInternationalHeadquartersschool(“Honbu”Dojo)locatedinTokyo.In1985andconsecutivelyin1986,MatsuisucceededintwicewinningtheAllJapanChampionshipsandsuccessfullycompletingtheultimateKyokushinchallenge,the“100-Man-Kumite”inrecordtime.InJapan,Matsuibecameknownasamanof“unparalleledgenius”,someonewhocomesalongbutonceinanera.Thenin1987,heachievedhiscompetitivegoalandbecametheyoungestever,ChampionoftheWorld,allbeforehis25thbirthday.MatsuibecameBranchChiefoftheAsakusaBranchinTokyowherehepresidedoverthousandsofhisownstudentsbeforeassumingtheIKOworldwidedirectorshipin1994.KanchoMatsuitravelstodozensofIKOinternationalbranches,andtrainswithtensofthousandsofstudentsfromallovertheworld.Throughhissupremeleadershipoftheorganization,KanchoMatsuihassucceededininauguratingsixgroundbreakingandmonumentalchampionshipevents,includingthefirstever,Women’sWorldKarateChampionships,theInternationalSeniorChampionships,theInternationalYouthChampionships,theInternationalKataChampionships,theWorldCupTeamChampionship,andtheWorldWeightCategoryKarateChampionships.ThesestupendoustournamentopportunitiesnotonlyignitethecompetitivefeverthatbringsKyokushinfighterstothetopoftheirgame,butservestocaptureandcelebratethediversityofourorganization’smembershipandfurtherextendthereachofKyokushintotouchthelivesofmany.11
