StudyofRemoteSensing�ethodusing�icro�waveand�illimeter�waveProfessor,DepartmentofInformationElectronics,FacultyofEngineeringKO�I�uuichiroResearchOutlineRecentlyoccurringnaturaldisastersareincreasinginscaleandthreateningthelivesandpropertiesofcitizens.Althoughearlydetectionoffloodandlandslidedisastersduetolocalizedtorrentialrain,tsunamis,volcaniceruptions,etc.,isextremelyimportantfordisastermitigation,methodsforcollectinginformationduringnighttimeandrainyweatherhaveyettobeestablished.Thus,inourresearch,wearedevelopinganairbornehigh-resolutionimagingradarforobservingchangesingroundsurfacetoaiddisastermitigation.Researchcontentsincluderesearchanddevelopmentofimagingradarhardwareandestablishmentofgroundsurfacemicrovariationdetectionmethodsthroughresearchonmethodsforprocessingthedataacquiredbythehardware.Sofar,wehavedevelopedtheradarhardwareshowninFig.1,haveconductedgroundtests(Fig.2)andflighttests,andhavesucceededinacquiringradarimagesofthesamelevelofresolutionassatellitephotographs(Fig.3).��������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������04

ResearchField(s)Molecularcellbiology,StemcellbiologyKeywordsPluripotentstemcell,Hematopoieticstemcell,Transcriptionfactor,Proliferation,DifferentiationAdvantagesandFeaturesRecentstudieshaveindicatedthatEScells(pluripotentstemcells)andcancercells/cancerstemcellssharesimilarproperties.Inourresearch,weconcentratedonexploringthissimilaritywiththegoalofuncoveringnovelpathwaysforregulatingstemcellfate.Thiswasachievedthroughtheexaminationofgeneclustersimplicatedintheoncogenictransformationofnormalcells.ApplicationFieldsEScells(pluripotentstemcells)possesstheremarkableabilitytodifferentiateintoadiversearrayofcellsconstitutinganorganism.However,EScellsareincapableofgeneratingplacentalandextraembryonictissues.Webelievethatelucidatingtheregulatorymechanismsgoverningstemcellfatewouldpavethewayforthedevelopmentof"totipotentstemcelllines,"capableofgivingrisetoallcelltypescontributingtotheformationofacompletelivingorganism.15

ChemicalExplorationbyTheoreticalChemistryandComputerSimulationProfessor,DepartmentofLife,EnvironmentandAppliedChemistry,FacultyofEngineeringKAMACHITakashiResearchOutlineByusingmethodsofcomputationalchemistry,thestructureofamolecule,theenergychangeaccompanyingareaction,andotherinformationthatcannotbemadeknownbyexperimentalmethodscanbeobtainedcomparativelyeasily.Theimportanceofcollaborationofcomputationalchemistryandexperimentalchemistryisthuswidelyrecognizedtoday.Duetodramaticimprovementsincomputers,thistrendisacceleratinginvariousfieldsrelatedtochemistry.Inourlaboratory,wearedeployingtheoreticalresearchbasedontechniquesofreactionmechanismanalysisbyquantumchemicalcomputation.Thermodynamicdatasuchasheatofreaction,activationenergy,etc.,thatarealsoimportantforplantdesigncanbeevaluatedwithhighprecisionandreactionmechanismscanbeclarifiedthereby.Predictionsconcerningreactionselectivitycanalsobemadebasedonreactionkineticsandmolecularorbitalanalysis.Inrecentyears,theQM/MMmethodshavemadeitpossibletoapplycomputationalchemistrymethodseventomacroscopicsystemswithover10,000atomsandrealizedockingsimulationsofhighprecision.Thisisanticipatedforapplicationtodrugdevelopment.Wearepresentlytacklingsuchchallengingthemesassoftwaredevelopmentaimedatrationaldesignoforganicmolecularcatalystsexhibitinghighenantioselectivityandcatalystdevelopmentbasedoninformaticssuchasmachinelearning,etc.,thataregainingattentioncurrently.����������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������16

DevelopmentofSustainable�icrobial�ontrol�echnologiesAssociateProfessor,DepartmentofLife,EnvironmentandAppliedChemistry,FacultyofEngineeringOK�DAKen�ichiResearchOutlineAntimicrobialresistance(AMR)isathreatofglobalscaleanditisspeculatedthatAMR-associateddeathsmayreach10millionayearby2050.Ontheotherhand,thedevelopmentofnewantimicrobialshasbeenstagnantandactivenationwideinvolvementisdemanded.Inordertosustainantimicrobialtherapiesintothefuture,itisimportanttopromote,inadditiontoproperuseofantimicrobials,thedevelopmentofantimicrobialswithactionmechanismsthatareunlikelytoinduceAMRandresearchthatwouldenableeffectiveutilizationofconventionally-usedantimicrobials.Also,afilm-likestructurecalledbiofilmthatisformedbysomespeciesofbacteriaisbeingnotedasacauseofintractableinfectionduetoexhibitinghighresistancetoantimicrobialsandimmunesystemsanddevelopmentofeffectivecontrolmethodsisbeingdemanded.Ourgrouphasthusfarperformedlarge-scalescreeningofcompoundstoachievesuccessinacquiringbiofilminhibitorsthatsuppressesbiofilmformationbybacteria.Further,wehavefoundthatbiofilminhibitorshaveaneffectofimprovingtheeffectsofantimicrobialsagainstantimicrobialresistantbacteria.Inaddition,wehaveclarifiedthatantimicrobialresistantbiofilmscanbedisinfectedeffectivelybyusinganantibacterialpeptidecallednisinthatisproducedbylacticacidbacteria.Presently,wearedeepeninganddevelopingtheseresearchesandcarryingoutresearchaimedatdevelopingtechnologiesof“controlwithoutinductionofresistance”(=sustainablemicrobialcontroltechnologies)ofAMRandbiofilmsthatarepresentingproblemsinsuchfieldsasmedicine,foods,environment,etc.20

ResearchonQualityImprovementofThinSteelPlatesUsingMaglevTechnologiesAssistantProfessor,DepartmentofElectricalEngineering,FacultyofEngineeringENDOAyatoResearchOutline1.ResearchbackgroundThinsteelplatesarewidelyusedinfieldsmainlyinvolvingvehiclesandhouseholdelectricproducts.Althoughinaproductionlineforthinsteelplates,contacttransfermainlyusingrollersisperformedinatransferprocess,thereisaprobleminthatcontactwiththerollerscausedegradationofsurfacequalitysuchasplatingdefectsandflaws.Inourresearch,wearestudyingtechnologiesforholdingandtransferringthinsteelplatescontactlesslyusingmagneticlevitation(maglev)technologiesassolutionmethodstotheaboveproblem.2.MaglevtechnologiesforthinsteelplatesInourresearch,wearestudyingmaglevtechnologiesforthinsteelplatesusingadevicesuchasshownintheFig.1.Electromagnetsarepositionedintheperipheryofathinsteelplatethatistheobjectoftransferandthevoltagesappliedtotheelectromagnetcoilsarecontrolledtomaketheelectromagnetsgenerateappropriatemagneticforcesandrealizelevitation.Also,toachievelevitationwithoutcontactoftheelectromagnetsandthethinsteelplate,acontrolmethodinwhichthegapsbetweenelectromagnetsandthethinsteelplatearefedbacksoastomaintainafixeddistanceisadopted.However,maglevcontrolhasextremelyunstablecharacteristics.Inparticular,anextremelythinsteelplatewithathicknessof0.30mmorlessdeformsduetoitsflexibilityintoanextremelycomplexshapeduringlevitationandentersanunstablestateoffallingeasily.Thus,inordertopreventfallingduringholdingandtransfer,weareperformingresearchmainlyonclarificationoftheshapesofthinsteelplatesandvibrationphenomenaduringlevitation,controlmethodsforsuppressingthevibration,etc.Also,sinceflexibilityandvibrationcharacteristicschangeaccordingtothematerial,size,andplatethicknessofthelevitatedobject,wearealsoexaminingdesignmethodsformaglevsystemsthataresuitedfordiverselevitatedobjects.Thisstudyexaminesanappropriatelevitationmethodforthinsteelplates.Oneoftheproposedmethodsismagneticlevitationutilizinggravity(Fig.2).Bychangingtheorientationofthethinsteelplate,theeffectofdeflectionissuppressed.However,disturbancescausedbytransportmayaffectthelevitationstability.Wearestudyingsystemconfigurationsandcontrolmethodsthatarenotaffectedbytransportdisturbance.Ourresearchgroupaimstoestablishamethodofconstructingamagneticlevitationsystemthatmatchesthecharacteristicsofthelevitationobject.42

SocialAreaAnalysisofUrbanLivingEnvironmentsAssociateProfessor,DepartmentofSocio-EnvironmentalStudies,FacultyofSocio-EnvironmentalStudiesUESUGIMasayaResearchOutlineInourlaboratory,weareanalyzingtheurbanlivingenvironmentandassociatedbehavioralandawarenessfactorsofresidentsfromrelationshipswithdistributionofresidentcharacteristicsaccordingtosmalldistrictunitssuchaspostalcodedistricts.Specifically,thegeographicinformationsystem(GIS)andstatisticalmethodsareusedtoclarifygeographicaldifferencesinpublicsafety,trafficbehaviorofresidents,awarenessregardingearthquakeresistanceofhomes,etc.,andtoexamineimprovementpoliciesinaccordancewiththeneighborhoodcharacteristics.Also,inordertounderstandtheresidentcharacteristicsinsmalldistrictunits,weusegeodemographicsdatainwhichneighborhoodsofJapanareclassifiedaccordingtomultiplesocialareatypes(neighborhoodtypessuchasdistrictwithalargenumberofyoungpeoplelivingalone,districtwithalargenumberofwealthymiddle-agedandolderadults,districtinwhichagingisprogressing,etc.)basedontheresidentcharacteristics.1.ResearchonphysicalandsocialenvironmentalfactorsofburglariesinresidentialareasThecrimeincidencedataaccordingtoneighborhoodsthataremadepublicbylocalgovernmentsareusedtoexaminehowtheoccurrencesofcrimessuchasresidentialburglarydifferaccordingtoproportionofdetachedhousings,proximitytoamajorroad,aswellassocialareatypeofadistrictandtospecifyneighborhoodswhereanti-crimemeasuresaretobestressedinaccordancewiththemodusoperandiofcrime.2.ResearchonneighborhoodfactorsthatpredicttrafficbehaviorsofindividualsPersonTripSurveydatathatcapturethetrajectoryofapersoninonedayareusedtoexaminehowthetrafficmeansselectionofanindividualindailylifeactivitiessuchascommutingandshoppingdifferaccordingtosocialareatypeapartfrompersonalattributesandtoevaluatethepossibilityofpolicyinductionforconversingtransportationmodefromautomobilestotrain.3.ResearchonpublicenlightenmentofearthquakeresistanceofhomesWeinvestigateresidents’awarenessofearthquakeresistanceandinformationmediausedbyresidentsintheprocessofhomeimprovementusingquestionnaires.Additionally,weevaluatedifferencesintrendsaccordingtosocialareatypeofresidencestospecifyeffectiveenlightenmentmeasuresandtargetsthereofforinformationprovisionbylocalgovernmentsinrelationtoearthquake-resistantreinforcements.70
